Numbers 15:39, Sifre N. 115,228 Look at it and recall the commandments of the Lord and observe them, so that you do not follow your heart and your eyes in your lustful urge(R. Nathan,R.Hiyya Commentary. In order to teach that God's decrees have both an immediate effect in keeping the individual from sin and a reward that will come in the future, R. Nathan tells a morality tale that is surely a classic of its kind. Since the verse speaks of the purpose of wearing the fringes being to counteract the lustful urges of the heart and eyes, the story illustrates how this literally happened. The reward, promised in the phrase I, THE LORD YOUR GOD, follows when the beautiful woman he desired lustfully becomes his legally. 2 Numbers 5:11, Sifre Numbers 7, 10-R. Ishmael says, "We do not need this verse to teach us that. If in the case of a divorced woman, which is of lesser severity since she is permitted to return to her divorced husband if he is an Israelite, she is unfit for priestly marriage, certainly in the case of the Sotah,...(Compare: Agunah of Pilagesh Ahava Rabba)
